A recent article titled “The Link Between Service and Success” by Dilip Patil discussed how service and success are more connected than most people believe.
Service can appear in many different ways. It can be charity work or donating money, but it can also be looking for ways to lift others up in everyday interactions, intentionally adding value to others lives, or putting the needs of others before yourself. All of these habits help you to be a more service oriented person, and can lead you to be more successful.
Service builds trust. In business your employees, coworkers, and business partners will trust you more if you serve them by showing that you care about them.
Service can multiply your influence because those you serve will speak more highly of you. These people will carry your reputation forward, and others will be more likely to trust you because of it.
Service can open opportunities. Those you serve will be more likely to recommend you for a job or introduce you to someone who can. Having positive connections with those around you will open doors in your future.
Service brings purpose. Success without service may feel meaningless. If your purpose is only your own gain you may achieve success, but have no one to celebrate your achievements with. Service “Transforms accomplishment to legacy.”
Alex Johnson was known for his service. He played baseball in college. Afterwards, his high school asked him to come back as a coach for their baseball team. Alex Johnson, though grateful for the opportunity, chose to be the coach for a different high school that he could see was struggling. His choice was a quiet example of service to the high school baseball players that needed help.
In another moment, a neighbor fell, was stuck, and was unable to get up. Alex was called to help because his reputation allowed others to feel confident that he would be willing to serve them.
